Swing Axle Conversion Kit

Remove your troublesome gear reduction boxes with this Straight Axle Conversion for any 1956 to 1967 Bus or Pickup. This is the least expensive way to lower the rear (3 1/2 to 4 inches - requires short-travel shocks) and take advantage of the higher gearing the Bug or Type 3 transmission that is recommended in this conversion. Supplied are the special-length axle tubes, NEW gold-anodized spring plates (not used, reworked stock spring plates like our competitors do), transaxle gasket set, rear axle seal kits, brake cable extension tubes and the instructions to complete the conversion. Note: Requires Type 3 or 1968 Bug long axles (28 7/16 inch) as well as a few other items that you will find at your local VW recycling yard.  NOTE:  The axle tubes supplied with this kit are NOT stock axle tubes.  The tubes have been modified to work with our spring plates.  Stock VW axle tubes CANNOT be substituted for the correct ones included in this kit.

IRS I Conversion Kit

In an recent issue of a prominent VW magazine, you saw how to do this the hard way. We've been doing all of the hard work to offer this type of kit for the past 15 years, relieving you of the hassles of cutting and welding to accomplish this conversion. Again this conversion lowers the rear of your Type 2 about 3 1/2 to 4 inches and does require the short-travel shocks for the best ride. Kit comes with special length "floating" CV axles, special IRS control arm clamps (with appropriate hardware), NEW gold-anodized special length spring plates (again, not used-reworked like our competitors do), trans nosecone gasket, brake cable extension tubes and the instructions to complete the conversion. Note: Requires an IRS Transmission from a 1969 to 1979 Bug or Type 3, IRS Control Arms (complete with Axle Stub, Bearings and Brakes) from a 1969 to 1979 Bug or Type 3, Bug or Type 3 CV Joints and a few other items that you may have sitting around or at your local VW recycling yard.

IRS II Conversion Kit

After several years of careful research and development, there is now an IRS Kit to allow your 1956 to 1967 Bus or Pickup to run at STOCK HEIGHT! Using the stronger 1968 to 1979 Bus IRS components, this system can handle the larger power plants that many of customers are retro-fitting into their splitties. Kit comes with special length "floating" CV axles, modified 1968 to 1979 Bus Control Arms, special IRS control arm clamps (with appropriate urethane bushings and hardware), trans nosecone gasket and the instructions to complete the conversion.. Note: Requires an IRS Transmission from a 1969 to 1979 Bug or Type 3, Rear Axle Bearing Housings (complete with the Axle Stub, Bearings and Brakes) from a 1969 to 1970 Bus/Pickup (if you want to continue with the large 205mm 5 bolt pattern), stock Spring Plates from a 1968 to 1971 Bus/Pickup, the large Allen Bolts from the IRS Control Arm Connectors from a 1969 to 1979 Bug or Type 3. For stock height ride, you must also use Type 4 CV Joints and Type 2 Rear CV Boots with all hardware (we offer this as a kit), as well as "Thing" Inner CV Flanges (we offer Type 1 Flanges that are modified to accept the larger joint as a pair exchange).

Rear Lowering Plates (Boomerangs)

Lower the rear of your 1968 to 1979 Type 2 with these high-strength "boomerang" shaped plates that connect between your spring plate and the rear control arm/axle bearing housing to accomplish a 3 1/2 to 4 inch drop to match your lowered front end. Does not make the rear wheels "squat" (that happens when you wanna be cheap and re-set the spring plates - bad for the Rear Axle Bearings!). Complete with the plates, hardware and instructions for. Note: Requires short travel shocks and possible realignment of your brake lines/hoses depending on installation.

Vanagon Lowering Spring Kit

Improve the ride and handling with these specially manufactured springs to lower your 2WD Vanagon approximately 45mm (1 3/4 inches) from it's original stock height. These are not cut from used springs, these are new. After careful research and manufacturing by our exclusive German WD Outlet, these springs are carefully crafted from new materials to prevent cracking and sagging, a problem associated with cutting or heating. Very popular with Vanagon Westfalia Owners, as this should allow you to park that Camper in most garages. Works with existing shock absorbers, as these are essentially the same springs offered as an option on the 1988 to 1991 Vanagon GL Series. At last report, you'd have to spend over $1200 on a set of 4 of these springs. Our price is a little lighter on the wallet. Fits only 2 Wheel Drive Vanagons, not Syncros. Sold only in matched sets of 4 Springs.

New Spring Plates: Adjustable & Non-Adjustable

For years, adjustable spring plates have been available for all kinds of on and off road applications, but were designed around the usage of Type 1 Rear Torsion Bars and Spring Plate designs. And to produce our Swing Axle and IRS I Conversions above, we had to rely on old spring plate cores provided by the customer as well as purchase them outright. But due to the scarcity and lack of strength of the OE produced plate cores, the solution was to manufacture stronger spring plates in-house. These alloy steel spring plates have a chrome-moly steel insert with proper splines for the rear Type 2 torsion bars. They come gold zinc plated to provide protection against corrosion. They are approximately 25 percent thicker and much stronger than OE produced spring plates and are especially suited for higher horsepower applications. Available for almost any application on a Type 2, the adjustable models help solve the problem of "Sagging Rear End Syndrome", which has become a problem on later made Buses. All models of spring plates use the OEM rubber bushings for a no squeak ride. Adjustable spring plates come with rubber inner bushings and mounting hardware for a hassle-free installation. Non-Adjustable plates are provided for installation with the existing bushings and hardware. Also available in the higher strength material are new replacement stock spring plates for 56 through 79 Type 2 applications.
