In many cases, steering problems can be traced to a number of things and not the steering box. Drag Links are the "S" shaped Tie Rod that runs between the Pittman Arm and the Center Swing Lever on your beam. Ends are not replaceable on the Drag Link, so the entire piece must be replaced. Tie Rods and Drag Links are prone to failure if the Boots on the ends are trashed, allowing dirt and grit to get in and destroy the "ball joint" of the Tie Rod End.

The Steering Damper is a sideways "shock absorber" that dampens the bumps and irregularities encountered on the road surface throughout your steering system. The best hint to know when a Steering Damper has gone bad is that the Steering Wheel begins to "wiggle" under load as it's going down the highway. The installation of a Steering Damper was standard equipment from 1963 through 1979, optional up to 1962.

An overlooked area in poor steering control is the Center Pin Box on your front beam. Worn bushings and pin can make you spend more than you have to for an unnecessary steering box, kingpin spindles or link pin set. Original German FEBI/Bilstein for 55-67 and MELEY 68-79 repair kits are the only ones we carry because they are complete with not only new bushings and pin, but all of the necessary seals and hardware required for a professional installation. Most cheaper kits we've seen on the market just come with a new pin and two bushings. Don't compromise your steering with cut-rate pricing. Also available are used swing levers that have been inspected, cleaned and painted.
211-498-171 Center Pin Repair Kit 1950 to 1967 $54.70
Note: 1950 to 1967 models requires reaming of bushings after installation for proper pin fit - see our tool rental for this reamer below.

Original Volkswagen procedures for replacing your center pin and the bushings required the front beam to be removed from the vehicle. Several years ago, we developed a Center Pin Bushing Removal/Installation Tool (patent pending) that allows you to do the same job without front beam removal. We normally rent these tools to customers that wish to do the job themselves. In addition, we rent the reamer tool required for 1950 to 1967 Type 2 Center Pin Bushings.
210-41571TRL Center Pin Install Tool - Rental 1950 to 1979 $45.00 PLUS $100.00 Deposit
210-41572TR Center Pin Reamer Tool - Rental 1950 to 1967 $45.00 PLUS $125.00 Deposit
These tools are carefully packaged to prevent damage, especially the reamer. We inspect these tools for damage before rental and those that are in questionable condition are pulled from the shelf to be repaired or scrapped. It is very important to take special care in the handling of these tools, especially the reamer, as if the reamer is dropped to the floor/ground, it can be damaged very easily. Deposit refunds are subject to the inspection of the condition of the tools returned. In addition, it is required that the tools be returned in their original packing to qualify for the deposit refund. Tools returned that are damaged beyond repair or that have been abnormally abused will be returned to the customer and the deposit(s) forfeited. Tools must be returned within 60 days of the rental invoice date or the deposit(s) will be forfeited.
